Graphics as a Career

A Graphic Designer creates advertising, logos, websites, illustrations, brochures or other visual materials for a client or clients. A Graphic designer has to be not only creative but able to work in teams, manage projects, a proofreader, and a copywriter. If planning to run your own business you must also know about management, marketing, production and finance.

A Graphic Designer must be organized and able to communicate well with clients including listening to them and selling your ideas. A designer needs to be able to change with the times and be able to accept rejection without allowing it to affect their confidence.

Designers must have problem solving skills. Like a puzzle, creating the right combination of fonts, colors, and images can mean every piece falling right into place for the project.

Graphic Designers use a number of tools available to them including but not limited to one of my favorites, Photoshop. They should be familiar with computer software such as InDesign, Quark XPress, Adobe Illustrator, and other painting and graphic design tools. Even thought today’s software makes the job seem easier it is no replacement for creativity and artistic ability.

Once statistic shows that of the nearly 25,000 people who try to enter the field of graphic design each year, only about 60 percent last the first two years, and about 30 percent remain in the field at five years.
